Reality is a shadow.
Now before you jump to conclusions, I invite you to reevaluate your associations with the words “reality” and “shadow.”
Also, you’ll see how this allows you to resolve any problem you have in life.
Most of us assume reality is what we perceive through the five senses.
But it’s deeper. The reality you actually experience is your thoughts and emotions. That’s the essence of experience.
Here’s an easy way to innerstand this. A crowd of people stand on a boardwalk, watching the sunset, and everyone has a different experience…
- One person feels gratitude.
- One person is thinking about what to have for dinner.
- One person is regretting a decision they made 5 years ago.
- One person is overwhelmed with joy.
See how it’s not about the sensory input (the sunset), but about the experience of thoughts/emotions? That’s the reality we experience.
Now, let’s explore how reality is a play of shadows.
The Shadow Play of Reality
To have an experience as an individual, in a specific frequency range of existence, you inherently have to place a throttle or a lens on the Infinite Potential of reality.
Think of Ultimate Reality as pure light. For that pure light to even be visible/experiential, it needs to express through a lens.
So what are these lenses? Our thoughts and emotions.
And what does a lens do? It limits and changes the pure light. Another way of looking at this is a shadow (something in the lens that partially obstructs the pure light).
This relates to Plato’s allegory of reality being a play of shadow puppetry.
Note: Plato’s allegory of the cave describes people chained in a cave who mistake shadows on the wall for reality because they’ve never seen the real world. When one person escapes and sees the truth outside, he realizes the shadows were illusions (symbolizing how enlightenment is seeing beyond appearances to true understanding).
But again, the shadow we call reality isn’t what we perceive with our five senses, it’s our thoughts and emotions.
And to be clear, this isn’t necessarily “bad.”
It’s a spectrum. The “high vibe” thoughts and emotions are the clearest ones. The ones that let the light shine through with minimal blockage. That’s why we describe them as pure and it feels like an effortless flow state. While the “negative” thoughts and emotions are the “darkest” ones — blocking more light and creating more difficulty.
Why This is So Useful
This shadow play idea opens up simple ways to stop creating suffering for yourself.
It can apply to all the problems we have, and all the ways we ensnare ourselves in negative feedback loops.
Things like:
- Getting triggered around politics
- Addictions like porn
- Money problems
Here’s how to resolve these through the “lens” of reality as shadow play.
2 Steps to Resolve Any Problem
For anything you’re struggling with, apply these two steps:
- Let go of attachments.
- Express the essence of the energy.
Think of attachments like blocks in your lens of reality. They create shadows and feedback loops of negative thoughts/emotions.
Let’s go through some examples to make it clearer for you.
Example 1: Political Trigger Addiction
For someone who’s always getting worked up, angry, or fearful around politics, here’s what they would do.
- Let go of their attachments to politics.
It’s not healthy or useful to waste so much time and energy on politics. And, be real, most of what people get triggered about is drama and gossip (not even close to the root of societal issues).
So letting go might look like:
- Not watching the news.
- Limiting exposure to media.
- Practicing presence and non-reactivity in the face of “political” conversations.
- Asking yourself deeper questions about reality to start deprogramming media propaganda.
Now don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. That’s why step two is to express the essence of this energy.
- Express the essence of the energy (sovereign power).
The essence of this politically-focused energy is sovereign power.
People who get worked up around politics tend to project their sovereign power onto politicians and institutions.
The solution here is to embody and express your sovereign power.
What does this look like?
- Having a strong sense of purpose in life.
- Working toward a vision.
- Helping people around you.
- Inspiring people.
- Building/creating things.
All of those not only dissolve the negativity around the addiction to political theatre. It helps you focus on things you can do that actually make the world a better place (and improve your life too).
Example 2: Porn Addiction
Porn addiction is externalizing your sexual energy. This projection is the shadow called lust (which is why many refer to porn as demonic).
So here’s the solution to this shadow projection:
- Let go of the attachments to porn.
- Quit – stop watching it.
- Observe the energy of lust and let it pass without acting on it.
- Express the essence of your sexual energy.
This might look like:
- Engaging in more healthy sensual practices like dance or intuitive movement.
- Doing more creative things (sexual energy = creative energy).
- Pleasuring yourself without any external focus (just feeling the sensations in your body).
- Only engaging in sex with a partner you deeply care about and feel safe with.
All of those are purer expressions of sexual energy that dissolve the shadow of lust.
Example 3: Money Problems
Money problems are shadows showing lack of self worth, scarcity mindset, etc.
This one can be more difficult than the others, because we need money to participate in society on a daily basis.
But here’s what to do with this:
- Let go of attachments to money problems.
This means noticing and letting go of…
- Fear around money. Does a wave of anxiety hit you when you think about your bank account?
- Judgment of money. Do you judge rich people?
- Complaining about money. Do you complain about never having enough money?
- Negative self-talk around money. What does you inner dialogue around money look like?
It’s not about ignoring money or pretending that you’re rich when you’re not. It’s about not getting caught up in negative thoughts/emotions that perpetuate scarcity in your life.
- Express the essence of worth and inner abundance.
What does this look like?
- Being grateful for everything you have.
- Being grateful for every dollar you spend and receive.
- Asking for things (feeling worthy enough to ask).
- Being open to give and receive more.
- Taking bolder action with projects, creations, business, career moves, etc.
Know that the stream of your life comes from a Higher Power. This creates both confidence and humility, while acquainting with the infinite abundance of The Creator.
When you truly express the essence of abundance, money ceases to be an issue. At first, you’ll find peace with your current situation. But then, the more you express the energy of abundance in your daily actions, the more money will flow to you.
See how this applies to all “difficulties” in life?
By letting go and expressing the essence, you dissolve the shadows in your reality.
Witness & Play
Now before we wrap this up, here are two simple keys to remember…
Witness and Play.
When you witness reality from a neutral space, you’re not entangling yourself with heavy thoughts and emotions. This is the essence of mindfulness.
Witnessing helps you let go and let the shadows dissolve. It acquaints you with the pure light of your being.
But we’re in human form, so just passively witnessing life doesn’t work. Action is needed. That’s where play comes in.
When you let go… When you witness… When you realize there’s really nothing missing… You see that you already have the essence of the energy you’re looking for within you.
That means — instead of struggling and chasing — you play.
When you express the energy of inner abundance, money is a game you play. Not a constant struggle.
When you express the energy of love and wholeness, relationships are playful… A dance. Not a transactional battle.
You’re already free. You’re already fulfilled. Realize this. And when you express that, you’ll open up surprising new dimensions of that freedom and fulfillment.
Witness and play.
Embrace the shadow play of the human experience.
With gratitude,
Stephen Parato
